This week Noel Mitchell from WVU Extension Agency and Americorps member Jazlynn Hambrick visited New River Primary, Ansted Elementary, and Divide Elementary schools for their monthly taste tests. The focus this month was on sweet potatoes, and the students were delighted with a special treat of sweet potato fries. This initiative is an excellent way to introduce students to new and healthy foods which they can also learn to prepare themselves. Encouraging students to make their own sweet potato dishes not only promotes healthy eating habits but also empowers them to be more involved in their nutrition choices. Additionally, providing them with the opportunity to vote on their preferences adds an element of engagement and participation. It's a creative way to blend culinary education with promoting a sense of autonomy and responsibility for one's health.

Fayetteville PK-8 had a delicious lunch. Everyone loves spaghetti accompanied by a side of garlic bread. Ensuring a well-balanced meal, a fresh, crisp salad was included along with a generous portion of nutritious broccoli. Topping this delectable delight, students were treated to a sweet chocolate chip cookie as a satisfying dessert option. New River Primary students experienced tastes from a different culture. This included delicious egg rolls and fried rice, accompanied by refreshing mandarin oranges, a fresh salad, and crunchy carrots. The students were treated to a fantastic meal that offered a combination of flavors and textures.

Oak Hill High School had the pleasure of welcoming Brandi McClellan from Jan-Care Ambulance & General EMS back to Aleah Denny's health class. Despite working tirelessly all night on the ambulance, Brandi arrived this morning with a mission to certify the students in first aid. Over the course of the past two weeks Ms. Denny has been diligently guiding the students through the textbook coursework. Jack McClung joined for the afternoon classes to help with hands-on activities and Brandi took charge of the final certification test. We cannot express enough gratitude to Ms. Denny, Brandi, and Jack for their dedication and hard work. Their collective efforts have not only certified these students in first aid but have also opened new doors for their future careers. Congratulations to all the newly certified students on successfully completing the hands-on activities and passing the final certification test!

John Stewart with WVU was at New River Primary on December 11, 2023 and gave a set of science tool kits to Mrs. Vandall’s 2nd grade class. The creation of the kits was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The kits will be available for all 2nd grade classrooms at NRP to use. Mr. Stewart also gave a presentation to her class about filtered lights, where kids experimented with blue and red filters and how the filters make colors change or, they seem to disappear. Students really enjoyed the presentation and were excited to share what they learned.

New River Primary Student Support Team hosted their 2nd annual Gingerbread Night on December 7, 2023, which is one of their many Family Engagement activities organized throughout the school year. This event was a collaborative event among the Student Support Team, PTA, Save the Children, and Early Steps to School Success. Family engagement is when families and educators, including teachers and administrators, partner together to share the responsibility of supporting student’s learning. These activities are so important for staff and families because it helps improve parent/family communication among staff, helps encourage parent/family involvement, and allows fun to be incorporated into learning and academics! This event also helped support New River Primary’s three goals, which are: Improve Student Achievement in Reading, Improve Student Achievement in Math, and Improve the School Culture and Climate for Students and Staff. The event consisted of a lot of fun activities which included: writing letters to Santa, coloring/cut and paste Grinch and gingerbread activities, building gingerbread houses, making a “melting snowman” cupcake, face painting, making reindeer food, and taking pictures with Santa and the Grinch.
