“Can we do that again? I loved it!” Korie Shuff echoed the sentiments of the NRP students and parents who attended WVU’s Night of Code. Utilizing Microsoft’s Make.Code in Minecraft Education Edition, students programmed their agent to destroy fire hazards and navigate mazes as they completed the challenges focused on fire prevention. Many families left that evening with information on how turn their child’s gaming experiences into educational ones.

Plateau Medical Center invited New River Primary to make ornaments for their Christmas tree to be displayed on their Christmas tree in their main lobby at the hospital. They requested that the ornaments be paper ornaments or other type of ornaments. They also requested for teachers to not go out and buy supplies, but to let the students spark their creativity from items they already had on hand! This was a great opportunity for our school to collaborate with another community agency to spread some holiday cheer! Every classroom at New River Primary made ornaments, but those featured in the pictures include ornaments made by students from Ms. Nevi, Mrs. Angelona and Mrs. Fritz’s classrooms.

New River Primary Administrators, Lee Jones and Marsha Bishop, had a surprise Appreciation Day for our Outside Duty Workers. These employees are outside directing traffic, getting students on and off busses, and assisting car riders every day no matter the weather! We appreciate all that they do to keep the students of New River Primary safe. With much appreciation to McDonalds of Oak Hill for providing the sausage biscuits, Duncan Donuts of Fayetteville for providing coffee, and Starbucks for providing coffee!

Fayette County Gifted Program Visits Glenville State University and Learns about Brain Development Middle and High School students from the Fayette County Gifted Program toured Glenville State University on October 27, 2022. While there, Professor Katelyn Ensor, specializing in Cognitive Science, lectured students on brain development. Fayette County launched a pilot program for middle school gifted students last year. All gifted students from across the county are bussed to Oak Hill Middle School where they study Problem Based Learning units that involve critical and creative thinking and help solve real world problems. This year students have been studying brain development. Topics covered include metacognition, schema, moral decision making, and problem solving. Mrs. Ensor’s lecture helped to deepen student understanding and give them more ideas to incorporate in their projects. Students were able to learn about college life, academics, admission costs, and begin thinking about their futures. Ava Queen and Holly Jones from Oak Hill Middle School, as well as Dean Ryan from Meadow Bridge High School, volunteered to complete a problem-solving activity during the presentation.
