Midland Trail High School is excited to welcome incoming freshmen through the Trail to Success: Freshman Transition Academy, a new initiative designed to help rising ninth-grade students begin high school with confidence, connection, and a clear path toward success.
The transition from middle school to high school is one of the most important milestones in a student’s educational journey. New expectations, increased academic responsibilities, and unfamiliar routines can feel overwhelming for students and families alike. The Trail to Success Academy was created to make that transition smoother by providing students with the tools, relationships, and support they need before the school year officially begins.
During the academy, students will gain a better understanding of what it means to be successful at Midland Trail High School. Sessions will focus on academic expectations, attendance requirements, behavioral procedures, graduation pathways, eligibility requirements, and team building activities. Students will also have opportunities to connect with teachers, staff, peer mentors, and fellow classmates, helping them build confidence and a sense of belonging before their first day as freshmen.
This initiative is aligned with the Student Success domain of the West Virginia Balanced Scorecard, focusing on improving attendance, strengthening school climate, increasing student engagement, and reducing barriers that may impact success. Rather than waiting until challenges arise, Midland Trail High School is taking a proactive approach by helping students start strong and identifying support needs early.
The Freshman Transition Academy is not just a one-day event—it is the beginning of a year-long commitment to student success. Information gathered during the academy will help staff provide targeted mentoring, intervention, and ongoing support throughout the school year to ensure students stay connected and on track.
