Midland Trail High School students had the unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the heart of local government yesterday, May 1, 2026, as they participated in Know Your County Government Day in Fayetteville.
This meaningful experience, designed to educate students as future voters, gave Midland Trail juniors a firsthand look at how county government functions and how local decisions impact everyday life.
A Day of Real-World Learning
Students began their day at the Circuit Court Annex, where they received an overview of the judicial system and heard directly from local leaders. From there, they rotated through a series of county offices, spending time learning from professionals who serve Fayette County every day.
Throughout the day, students visited and engaged with:
- The Sheriff’s Department
- Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
- County Commission
- County Clerk and Circuit Clerk Offices
- Assessor’s Office
- Voter Registration Office
- Fayette County Emergency 911 Center
Each session provided students with the opportunity to learn about the purpose of each office, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of how these departments work together to support the community.
Connecting Classroom Learning to Civic Responsibility
For many students, the experience brought their civics lessons to life. Instead of simply reading about government systems, they were able to see them in action—meeting the individuals behind the roles and learning how decisions are made at the local level.

Know Your County Government Day was made possible through a collaborative effort between the American Legion, Fayette County officials, the Fayette County Board of Education, and local school leaders. Students were guided throughout the day, ensuring a structured and engaging experience, and concluded their visit with lunch at the American Legion.
